Once a plant accepts that lubrication should be measured, not guessed at, the next question is: measured with what?
SDT Ultrasound has built a three-tier family of instruments around exactly that need, from a simple handheld device for daily rounds, to a full diagnostic workstation, to a fully automated system. Here’s how each one works, and who it’s built for.
LUBEChecker — precision lubrication, simplified
The LUBEChecker is SDT’s entry-level, purpose-built acoustic lubrication tool. It is built around the LUBESense1 sensor, a piezoelectric ceramic element housed in stainless steel and protected by a rubber cover, engineered specifically for the rough handling of daily lubrication rounds. Its job is deliberately narrow: connect it to the bearing, connect the sensor line to the grease gun, and watch decibel levels drop in real time as grease is applied, stopping the instant the reading bottoms out.
The LUBEChecker measures friction in real time. You stop greasing the moment optimal conditions are reached. This prevents over-lubrication, reduces friction, and keeps bearings running cooler and longer”. It’s designed to require almost no training curve: “Simply open the box, connect it to your grease gun, and hear the difference”.

Crucially, the LUBEChecker isn’t just as a technician’s tool, but as an enabler of what we call Operator-Driven Lubrication (ODL), part of a broader Operator-Driven Safety and Reliability (ODSR) philosophy. Rather than reserving precision lubrication for a small, specialized reliability team, the LUBEChecker’s simplicity is designed to put objective, condition-based greasing directly into the hands of front-line operators during their normal daily rounds.
Best for: plants wanting to put objective, repeatable lubrication decisions into every operator’s hands, at low cost and with minimal training.

SDT340 LUBExpert Mode — where condition monitoring and lubrication finally meet
The SDT340 LUBExpert Mode integrates the full intelligence of SDT’s LUBrain algorithm into the SDT340 data collector, closing a structural gap that has existed in most reliability programs for years: condition monitoring teams and lubrication teams typically use separate tools, separate databases, and separate schedules, even though they work on the exact same bearings.
The logic: “Condition Monitoring assesses the status, but lubrication secures it… When we lubricate a bearing with the precision of the LUBrain algorithm, we are actively creating the conditions for its long-term health”.
On the hardware side, the SDT340 is a serious instrument. It uses High Signal Resolution (HSR) technology with a measurement resolution of up to 256,000 samples per second, and acquisition times extending to 600 seconds, built specifically to make slow-speed asset analysis (large gearboxes, kiln bearings, ball mills) reliable, a scenario that defeats many standard instruments. It carries a 3.5-inch full-color TFT screen, dual sensor inputs (ultrasound and vibration simultaneously), built-in infrared temperature measurement, and a tachometer. In other words, it’s a “portable laboratory” capturing ultrasound, vibration, temperature and rotational speed in one pass.
For lubrication specifically, the SDT340 LUBExpert Mode lets teams:
- Organize grease points inside the same asset hierarchy used for condition monitoring (plant → section → asset → bearing location).
- Configure each point with grease type, calibrated grease gun output, rotational speed, and exact bearing type, feeding directly into defect calculations.
- Execute guided work orders, loaded from the Ultranalysis Suite 3 (UAS3) software directly onto the device, walking technicians through each route step by step.
- Capture full measurement history — every reading, grease quantity, grease type, and lubrication step — tied to the same trend line as vibration and ultrasound condition data.
A real-world case documented shows the payoff. On a 1,600 mm outer-diameter bearing on a ball mill rotating at just 18.6 RPM — an extremely slow, hard-to-diagnose asset — combining regular SDT340 monitoring with LUBExpert implementation allowed the plant to triple the data-collection interval for condition monitoring, since grease replenishment (now condition-based rather than calendar-based) already occurred on the same 14-day cycle the lubrication team had previously used. The freed-up specialist time was redirected toward increased asset coverage and more targeted analysis, with no decrease in detectability.
Best for: reliability and condition-monitoring teams who want lubrication data fully integrated with vibration, temperature, and defect-trending on one connected platform.
LUBExpert ON-GUARD — from decision support to full automation
If the SDT340 LUBExpert Mode connects a human technician’s expertise to better data, the LUBExpert ON-GUARD removes the human from the routine decision loop entirely. It is our smartest lubrication solution, one that blends automation with precision, reliability, simplicity, and safety, maintaining optimal lubrication automatically to ensure long-lasting, trouble-free operation of rotating assets.
The system runs on the LUBrain precision lubrication algorithm, which continuously interprets acoustic friction data from permanently mounted sensors and triggers automatic grease injection, in the right quantity, at the right time, without waiting for a scheduled human visit.

To summarize, automatic operation takes center stage as the LUBExpert ON-GUARD handles the intricate task of bearing grease replenishment. This not only reduces workload and grease waste, but also ensures optimal machine performance, improving asset reliability.
Best for: critical, hard-to-access, hazardous, or high-consequence rotating assets — elevated conveyor bearings, remote pumping stations, high-temperature zones — where a missed manual greasing round is expensive or dangerous to correct.
Three tools, one maturity ladder
One thing to remember about our portfolio is that these products aren’t really competitors. They’re rungs on a maturity ladder a plant can climb as its reliability program grows:
- LUBEChecker gets condition-based, objective lubrication into the hands of every operator on the floor.
- SDT340 LUBExpert Mode brings that same acoustic discipline into a full-featured, database-driven condition monitoring workflow, letting engineers correlate grease events with vibration trends, temperature, and historical defect data.
- LUBExpert ON-GUARD automates the highest-value or hardest-to-access assets entirely, applying the LUBrain algorithm continuously, without waiting for a route.
This reflects a maturity model increasingly recognized in reliability engineering: start with measurement and awareness, move to data-integrated decision-making, and finish with targeted automation on the assets where the return justifies it, rather than trying to automate everything at once.
